I spent many months living in a beautiful mountain community in Haiti a few years back. One of my favorite things to do was visit a neighboring community where people carried on the ancient tradition of konbit, collective labor, to build a road. They would gather the produce from their gardens, the women would cook it, they'd get a few bottles of kleren, a local brew, and they would sing as the men swung their pick axes in perfect unison.
Konbit is based on my memories of those afternoons.
